The Young Local Art Award

At The Art Space Collective, we aim to engage the wider community in art.

We are excited to be facilitating a new idea for next year – The Young Local Art Award, involving a competition to encourage local young people to produce positive art on the topic of ‘peace’ , ‘welcome’ , ‘inclusiveness’ and ’Scarborough‘.

A subsequent exhibition of the artwork will be held at The Art Space Collective, starting 30 May, 2017.

“Every day we seem to be bombarded with images of the hardships, difficulties and tragedies that exist in the world. This competition is a way for young people to make a positive statement about peace, welcome and inclusiveness in the area in which we live. It is a way for young people to think about the difficulties that are faced by all people, both overseas and at home, and to make some art about their feelings that focus on the positive, rather than the negative. Scarborough is a place of beautiful natural landscape with a caring, supportive community, offering diverse, fun activities, cafes, restaurants and clubs. Living for two years in Hong Kong, a culture different from their own, gave Mo, Evie and Otis Maslin an understanding of, not only what it was like to feel like an outsider, but also how important it is to feel accepted into a new community. They appreciated and respected that changing environments could present challenges, and that there are things that help people to feel involved, rather than isolated. Mo, Evie and Otis are the inclusive and positive energy that drives the Art Space Collective, and we hope that you can remember them when you make your artwork for submission.”

The competition is open to young people from school years 7 to year 10, and the local high schools are being encouraged to participate.
It is open to anyone who feels a connection to Scarborough in some way.
